J. Macklin

Josephine Macklin began her dancing career at the High School for Performing and Visual Arts. She continued dancing and received her Bachelor’s degree from Texas Woman’s University. She has taught dance in HISD since 1981. She received the Dance Educator of the Year Award from the Texas Association for Health, PE, Recreation & Dance in 2003. In addition to the award, her dancers performed at the convention. Mrs. Macklin has taught dance for 18 years for NECAC. A number of students have danced with Alvin Ailey’s Dance Company, at the Alley, and at TUTS Theaters. She has successfully transformed lives through the art of dance.

Get Directions

  1. To give all interested participants the opportunity to explore the visual and performing arts through art education and interaction with professional artists.

  2. To provide early developmental experiences and appreciation for the Cultural and Fine Arts.

  3. To identify and nurture the artistic talents of gifted and motivated youth.

  4. To promote further study and/or continuum for these students who attend other fine arts programs.

  5. To provide the highest quality of creative experiences to enhance student's self-esteem and confidence

  6. To provide a safe, creative learning environment for student enrichment.

  • All children and youth ages 6 - 15 years of age

  • Talented children and youth who are highly motivated with strong interest in Fine Arts development

  • Students who attend or will attend Fine Arts Magnets during the regular school term.

  • Students who take private lessons and would like additional experience.

Dance: Ballet, Jazz, Modern, Tap

Visual Arts: Art Appreciation, Drawing, Painting, Photography

Music: Strings, Violin/Viola, Cello, Bass, Music Appreciation, Choral

  Tuition is $300 for the 5-week session. 15% discount for each additional child per family. Fee includes art/music materials and supplies, instrument insurance, and one uniform T-Shirt. Additional Fees: Field Trip transportation and finale costumes.
  Limited scholarships are available to returning students. To apply for a full or partial scholarship, write a one-page essay describing why you need assistance. Send essay to NECAC Board of Directors, P.O. Box 21476, Houston, Texas 77026. Essay must be received by TBA
  The instructional staff includes professionally trained and certified teachers who are also practitioners of their crafts. For over 20 years these dedicated teachers have identified, nurtured, and developed gifted and talented youth that have become students of classical arts, dancers, actors, musicians, writers and gymnasts. Their contributions to the larger arts community are immeasurable.

Summer Day Camp for the Arts is the major initiative of NECAC, a 501-C3 non-profit organization. The program is funded in part by BFI, Inc. City of Houston, individual donations, fundraising events, and tuition. HISD generously provides the facility. Donations are encouraged and are tax deductible.
